Won 7 of 9 classes in the Low Hunter Division at the
Littlewood June horse shows.
Walnut Creek's first week at Winter Equestrian Festival: He hasn't shown since November so WEF1 was his first show back. He showed in the Pre-Green Hunters 3'. He ended up with a 5th place over fences on the first day, then 2nd in under saddle and 3rd over fences on the second day.
When we got Ganner (Walnut Creek) we thought he was a good mover for a hunter. He's more of the athletic look; the dressage riders down the street love Ganner's movement. Ganner has exceeded our expectations in the flat classes. You can't beat winning them! For the hunters getting a flat ribbon is important when it boils down to championship points.
Walnut Creek was Reserve Champion at the Equestrian Sports Production June I show in the Adult Amateurs, and then topped that the next week, ending with the Adult Amateur Championship at the ESP June II show.
We travelled to Kentucky for the Summer shows. He won the under saddle in Section A of the PreGreens the first week and was consistently in the ribbons in the PreGreens and the Adult Amateurs.
We've been working on his flatwork and took him in the Ariat equitation class, where we finished 2nd against seasoned equitation horses. The test included a hand gallop fence, counter canter to a fence, a tight roll back and an in and out with a halt by the gate. He was right on for it all. The horse is amazing when it comes to the flatwork. We taught him the turn on the haunches in one day (as opposed to my Thoroughbred who took a year to understand the movement). Walnut Creek is already doing lateral movements, counter canter and his changes are there. I swear he has the soul of an old dressage horse in him because we start to teach him something and he just does it.
Second week in Kentucky was better still. He won the Low Hunter and earned the Reserve Championship in the PreGreen Hunters for the Kentucky Summer Classic. In the Adult Amateurs he won a ribbon in each class.
Ganner is still growing and that presented some challenges this
winter. He was growing faster than his tendonds and ligaments could
keep up so we backed off his jumping work for about a month until
everything evened out. Once the vet gave us the go ahead he went back
to work full time. He's 17hh now and still growing!
March 2009:
He's been very good in the show ring. He never looks at the jumps, although he can get distracted outside the ring, which is just greenie stuff. I took him in the main hunter ring and he marched right around to get a 4th out of 45 in the World Championship Hunter Rider week.
5th the same week on the flat.
I'm still getting used to him so we're not consistent yet. I've just never had a horse this big strided so while I think we're going slow his stride is too long. I'm learning to reel him in but it's a wonderful feeling that no matter how you jump in he'll walk down the lines for 20me.
This week we ended up with a 4th in the adult hunters over fences and an 8th in the flat at Week 9 of WEF. Considering we placed right behind the previous two circuit champions I'd say he's holding his own.
If you'd like to see pics of us go to and search for Tricia Barr. His pics will come up.
More news from Kentucky. WC got better and better the second week. He finished with a 4th place over fences in the Pre-Green Hunter and then 2nd under saddle in the same division.
So my trainer said it was time to let his mom ride in the 2'6" division (pictured left). We won the under saddle and earned a 5th over fences in a division with professionals. The picture isn't incredible but there aren't many four year olds that you can throw up the amateur and jump around a course. Not only that we had to do absolutely no prep for the ring - no longe or hack. We just took him out of the stall and straight to the ring. He's such a lovely horse."

Walnut Creek was quite a star at WEF week 5. After a week off, he came back to get a 2nd and 8th over fences in the Pre-Green Level 1 and a third in the under saddle with Penny Lombardo riding.
I've missed a lot of riding time due to insanity at work so I decided to show him on the weekend in the Low Adult Hunters for my first time back at WEF in two years. Walnut Creek and I had a great start and finished up Reserve Champion for the Low Adult Hunters 46 & Under.
We're having lots of fun with him.
Had a blast with Walnut Creek this past week at WEF in the Low Adult Hunters. First day we won an over fences trip out of 39 horses. Second day we were second over fences.
We're taking the week off from showing, and he looked disappointed when the trailer pulled away from the barn to take the other horses to the showgrounds.
I've had quite a few compliments on what a handsome horse he is.
Wanted to pass along news of Walnut Creek's first week at Winter Equestrian Festival. He hasn't shown since November so WEF1 was his first show back. He showed in the Pre-Green Hunters 3'. He ended up with a 5th place over fences on the first day, then 2nd in under saddle and 3rd over fences on the second day.
Ganner was a superstar. He really was a trooper in the ring. He had a little baby moment in each of the over fences classes. He stared at the billboard in the first round, then went right back in the next round and acted like it had always been there and was no big deal. The second day he had a gorgeous round and was late behind in a change. Considering the 9th place horse had an 87 a horse had to be about perfect to get in the ribbons. No matter I was tickled that he jumped so well. There were plenty with more ring time spitting and stopping in the scary ring.
We finished the week with a great under saddle. He pinned 7th, which is great. I had a lot of people come running over saying we got jipped and that he should have won. Honestly, I have been blessed to show some really nice movers and even being his mom I think Ganner was by far the best mover in the ring. In fairness to the judges and the competition, Ganner did anticipate the canter and jigged a couple steps in front of the judges. His ribbon was appropriate. And the anticipation isn't something I'm upset about because it's another sign he's trying to "think" and "please" his rider. Maturity will always give horses like that patience to wait for their rider.
